World Standards Day 2020 - Protecting the planet with standards
14 October 2020
Every year on October 14, the world celebrates World Standards Day, with the aim to promote awareness about the essentiality of ‘standardisation to global economy’ for enhancing peace and prosperity without harming our planet Earth. World Standards Day 2020 is themed “Protecting the planet with standards”.
World Standards Day 2020 aims to seize the opportunity to combat climate change with the power of international standards.
Our planet is facing an enormous challenge due to anthropogenic activities. Emissions of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, are resulting in warming of the earth. The practical solution to this problem is global agreement on the adoption of standards to economic development as they establish protocols and criteria to gauge various parameters. These technicalities improve energy efficiency, reduce harmful human impact on the environment and facilitate sustainable use of limited resources.
Many international standardisation organisations such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have developed hundreds of environment-related standards that help climate change mitigation and/or adaptation. For example, ISO has published a series of standards that help organisations gauge their GHG emissions and act accordingly.
